A Fun and Unique Gender Reveal

Expecting a new baby is such a sweet and special time. There is really nothing else quite like it. So much excitement and anticipation come along with waiting for the little one to arrive.

Part of the excitement of a new baby is finding out if it is a “he” or a “she.” Some parents choose to wait until the baby is born for this news. I have always thought it would be so special to do it this way. However, my husband and I did not wait until birth to find out if our kids were boys or girls. I guess we aren’t patient people!

Early in my pregnancy with our middle child in 2016, I started thinking about how we would find out the gender. I wanted to find out in a unique way but also wanted it to be simple. We didn’t want to have a big party or include a bunch of people. My husband and I just wanted it to be the two of us and our two-and-a-half year-old son. Our son was not allowed to attend my ultrasound, but we wanted the three of us to find out the news together. This meant we didn’t want to be told the sex during the appointment. This prompted me to think of a creative way we could all be surprised and find out together.

I had seen gender reveals online where mom or dad cut into a cake to find the middle either pink or blue. I had also seen parents pop balloons with colored confetti inside. There are parents who throw paint-filled balls to see which color goes “splat” on a piece of plywood. Shooting off fireworks is another cool one I’ve seen. But none of these seemed like the right fit for us.

Something Different

Cakes, confetti and fireworks are fun, but I wanted to do something I had never seen done before. I thought about it for weeks leading up to our big appointment. I wondered who I could get on board to surprise us with our big boy/girl news. Then it hit me! I could ask a florist! Florists make deliveries all the time of either pink or blue flowers, teddy bears and balloons. Why not ask one to deliver one of those arrangements to us? So, that’s what we did!

So, how did we pull off our flower arrangement gender reveal? It’s quite simple, really. We brought an envelope and a piece of paper to the ultrasound appointment. We asked the tech not to tell us the baby’s sex, but instead write it on the paper and seal it in the envelope. After the appointment, we stopped by the floral shop and gave the envelope to the florist. We told her what was inside and that we didn’t know the sex of the baby…it was her job to tell us!

We asked the florist to deliver to our house an arrangement of flowers, balloons and a stuffed animal in either pink or blue (depending on what she found inside the envelope). Our only request was that the delivery person leave the arrangement on our porch, ring the doorbell and leave. We paid the florist, then went home and waited for our special delivery!

The Big Reveal

I think the total wait time for the floral delivery was about two hours, but it felt like nine! We tried to keep ourselves and our two year-old busy to pass the time, but it was tough! When we finally heard the doorbell ring, we waited about thirty seconds before opening the door (we gave the delivery person time to leave). When we walked out onto our porch, much to our delight, we saw a big BLUE arrangement sitting there. We had another boy on the way! There were blue carnations, a teddy bear and blue and white balloons. It was really cute!

Joel and I were so excited! We took a moment to let the news sink in and we hugged each other on the porch. Our two year-old was excited to play with the balloons, ha ha! It was some of the most exciting news of our lives and the floral delivery added something extra special. I’m so glad we chose to find out we were expecting a boy in such a unique way. It’s something Joel and I will never forget.

The cool thing about receiving an arrangement as a gender reveal is that it can be done as a surprise for just you or an entire party. It would be cute to invite friends and family over for a gender reveal but not tell them how the news will be told. Schedule an arrangement to be delivered during the party and everyone will be surprised!
