Four Tips For Gaining Confidence In Using Your Essential Oils

You’ve purchased your first oils from Young Living (YL) and you’re excited to use them! But you may feel unsure about how to use them or if you’re doing everything “right.” Have no fear, you’ve got this. You really do! You are not alone and there are ways to start gaining confidence in using your essential oils that are really quite simple. Read on for my 4 favorite ways to do this!

1. Books

One of the most valuable ways to learn about oils and therefore gain confidence in using them is books! The best part is that you can usually find them on Amazon either in new or used condition. My first real in-depth knowledge about oils came from these books and I am so thankful I’ve had them since I started. It is so helpful to have books on hand that answer your questions about general essential oil topics as well as very specific ways to use them. When you’re first starting out, I suggest books written by authors who are covering only Young Living oils and products rather than any and all essential oils. This way you know you’re reading about the benefits and uses of the oils you actually own, not some other product somewhere in the world.

There are quite a few books out there about oils but my top recommendations for beginners are:

Essential Oils Pocket Reference

If you can only buy one book, I suggest buying, “Essential Oils Pocket Reference.” Published by Life Science Publishing, this book is specifically about Young Living oils (which is definitely what you want). It contains sections on the history of essential oils, YL products and personal usage. It is PACKED full of practical YL oils usage suggestions and instructions. For instance, you can look up a specific oil to see how it can be used and also look up a specific issue or condition and learn which oils can help with it.

I personally own the Eighth Edition but other editions are valuable as well. Some of the older editions contain information that, over the years, was no longer allowed to be published. The Eight Edition was the final pocket reference to be published before Life Science/Life&Science Publishing closed their doors. However, there was a book similar to the Pocket Reference released shortly before the company went out of business. This book is “The Essential Oil On-the-Go Field Reference” and has much of the same content as the Pocket Reference. Since the publishing company is no longer in business you will mostly find used copies of these books being sold on Amazon, eBay, etc.

Essential Oils Desk Reference/Home Reference

The “Essential Oils Desk Reference” is a much bigger and more in-depth version of the Pocket Reference by the same publisher. Since there is more to this book, the price tag naturally goes up. Like the Pocket Reference there are several editions of the Desk Reference available. The final reference published, and the one I own, is called “Essential Oils The Complete Home Reference.” The Desk/Home references are great to have, but not completely necessary for beginners especially if you have the Pocket Reference. These bigger books are something that makes the most sense for seasoned oilers who are using oils in more complex ways. You will want a book like this in the future, but as you’re focusing on the basics, it’s okay to skip it for now, if you’d like.

Gentle Babies

If you have babies, kids or plan to become a mom, this book by Debra Raybern is incredibly helpful! It is considerably smaller than the Pocket Reference and covers topics specifically pertaining to babies, kids, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and mothers’ health. Since it is not a huge book it is easy to find what you’re looking for. Some topics covered are ear infections, diarrhea, labor/delivery and the oils recommended for each. It really is a practical book for moms and is small enough to not cause overwhelm. It is well worth it to have this book on hand!

The Chemical Free Home Collection

This trio of books by Melissa Poepping cover three all-important topics when it comes to using essential oils in your daily life – Housekeeping, Face & Body and Baby & Mama. Melissa writes this to her potential readers, and I couldn’t say it better myself:

”I bet we’re very similar, my friend. I had a home chock full of products promising eternal beauty, cherub-like children, and an always-sparkling abode that smelled like rosebuds! (Don’t you love advertising?!). But then I started digging below the surface of these promises. And I didn’t like what I saw. Chemicals. A toxic soup of chemicals with proven correlations to autoimmune conditions, cancer, infertility, and a general dis-ease of every biological system. And the real irony of this revelation? I, like you, was voluntarily bringing these products into my home. And paying good money for them, too. That didn’t sit well with me.

So I made a drastic change. With painstaking research and sometimes hilarious trial and error testing, I ushered chemicals to the curb and developed natural, superior approaches to personal care, housekeeping, and everything baby. With these books, you can accomplish in a day what took me years to perfect. You CAN create THE CHEMICAL FREE HOME. When you know better you do better. I am with you every step of the way.”

Having books on hand that you can easily reference will help you feel more confident when using your oils. These resources will help bridge the gap between being a beginning oiler and knowing exactly how to apply your oils and when. I love that these books help take out the mystery and intimidation factor of oils. You can’t go wrong buying any of these books, they are definitely worth owning.

2. The Life Steps App

I have a lot of good news for you about the Life Steps app!

First, it is free for customers to download and use. There is SO much meaty information about YL products in the free version ( you only need the paid version if you become a brand partner). There are recipes, DIYs, product spotlights, news, announcements and much more right at your fingertips with this app. It is 100% worth it to get this free tool after you have completed setting up your YL account. You will need to enter your member number in order to access the content, so be sure to have that available when you log in the first time. The app is available to anyone who has an active YL account.

Second, it always has current information and updates. Unlike books that can have outdated information, the Life Steps team keeps the content current 100% of the time. New product launch? It’s in the app. Flash sale? It’s in the app. Monthly promos? It’s in the app. The Life Steps team does an amazing job at being on top of all the latest and greatest happenings at Young Living. As an added bonus, the content is always fresh and beautifully presented. This app is truly a treasure trove!

Lastly, my friend and mentor, Courtney, and her husband created Life Steps. Courtney is someone I trust as a YL Brand Partner but also as someone high standards and values. She is a phenomenal business woman and does not do anything halfway. You can count on the content of this app to be top-notch always. Because Courtney and her team only deliver the best.

In short, download the Life Steps app ASAP! This graphic walks you through how to get started:

3. Online Community

It’s great to have friends using and loving oils and YL products along with you. Even if you don’t yet have friends geographically close to you who are using them, you have friends far and wide who are! You can connect with these ladies conveniently online.

Facebook Group

There is a lovely Facebook group called Baby Steps to Wellness that you get to be a part of as my customer. Remember my friend Courtney from the Life Steps app? She and some of her friends host this group of thousands and thousands of other oilers. Courtney posts weekly in the Baby Steps group with Q&A posts where we can ask questions and get answers to all our oily questions. She shares info about upcoming classes, recipes, and YL news to keep us all up-to-date.

Unlike the Life Steps app, the Baby Steps group is specific to Courtney’s customers and team (which includes me and my team – and you!). Even though the group is large, there is a strong sense of community and being there for one another. One perk is you can search for specific oils and topics to see if they have been posted about by others in the past. You may just find that your questions have already been addressed with answers already posted. When you see how other women are using their YL products and seeing great results, it will give you the confidence to do the same!

It’s me, HI!

Since you’re my customer, you get to have my support all along your oily journey. I am here for you and so are others on my team. We really are all in this together! I want to help you become a sure and confident oiler. Because oils have the power to do amazing things and you have the opportunity to experience those things! You can contact me via my own Facebook group, by sending me an email or reaching out to me on Instagram. I will always respond to you!

4. Use Your Oils

Even when you’re unsure about exactly how, the best way to become more confident with your oils is to use them! There are many ways to use them and many are not “wrong.” There are a few things to know like, don’t put EOs directly in your eyes or ears, and it’s best to mix them with epsom salts before putting in bath water. But the options and versatility of YL oils are virtually endless. Once you find out which oils work in the best ways for you and your family, there will be no turning back. Books and other people’s experiences can be super helpful, but you won’t know which oils to use for your personal needs until you try! You will only begin gaining confidence in using your essential oils when you actually use them!

Go Get Oiling!

Now that you know you’re not alone in this oily world, you can confidently start using those amazing little bottles of yours. You have books, resources and people on your side to help you along the way. There’s no need to be scared or intimidated, you’ve definitely got this! Before long you will be functioning as a well-oiled woman and passing along your knowledge to others. 🙂
